How to Store Sandpaper and Avoid Humidity Damage

Sandpaper may seem tough, but the backing materials and adhesives used in coated abrasives are highly sensitive to temperature and humidity changes. Poor storage conditions can lead to curling, cracking, clogging, reduced flexibility, and shorter abrasive life.

Ideal Storage Conditions

For best performance, store abrasives in an environment with:

• Temperature between 16°C and 27°C (60°F to 80°F)
• Relative humidity between 35% and 50%
• Consistent conditions with minimal fluctuations

Avoid storing products in areas that experience extreme heat, cold, or moisture.

Keep Abrasives Away from Moisture

Store cartons off the floor and away from:

• Damp basements
• Concrete floors
• Cold exterior walls
• Areas prone to condensation

Excess humidity can soften adhesive bonds, causing sandpaper to load up faster, lose abrasive grain, and wear out prematurely.

Avoid Excessive Heat

Keep abrasives away from:

• Radiators
• Heat ducts
• Steam pipes
• Furnaces
• Direct sunlight

High temperatures can dry out backing materials and reduce product flexibility.

How to Store Sanding Belts

Proper belt storage is especially important.

Recommended:

• Keep belts in their original packaging until needed.
• Roll belts loosely and stand them on edge on a clean shelf.
• Drape larger belts over a large-diameter PVC pipe, drum, or purpose-built belt rack.

Never:

• Hang a sanding belt from a nail, hook, or peg.

Doing so can crease the backing and cause the abrasive surface to crack.

Signs of Storage Damage

If your abrasives show any of the following, storage conditions may be the culprit:

• Curling or cupping
• Brittle backing
• Cracking
• Excessive loading
• Poor cutting performance
• Premature grit loss
